A Hipster's Gospel

It was the other side of the world...

It was the Summer, or perhaps the Wintertime

Some details of the story have been lost over time

The exact dates are hard to establish for sure

The events though, all really happened

On the surface, it is a simple story of a small Jewish family traveling across the country. Actually, everyone was traveling, but this one family in particular, they had an interesting story.

People in Israel liked to talk about angels, about God sending someone to save their people, about the heroes of old. This family though, knew something the others didn’t.

They had been visited by an angel so now, in a crazy, extremely personal way, their entire lives had changed as the promised savior had been announced to be the baby they would soon have. So as they took to the crowded roads and went the same direction as everyone else, they were not so ordinary.

The trip took them a little bit longer than they would have liked, and they arrived after the city was filled. They were coming from far away and had to travel slowly because of the soon to be born baby.

When they finally did arrive, every hotel was full; not even the most expensive rooms were available, not that they could have afforded them anyways; this man made his living as a carpenter.

So they went where no one else was. They stayed in a stable. It was dry, it was warm. Would have been easy enough...

Except for the baby. There wasn't time to find a midwife. The city was an unfamiliar mess. And he came suddenly.

So he was born. Right there in the stable with the sickening smell of the animals

He was born.
In the dark, unsanitary cave in the uncaring surrounding city

He was born

It was still dark and dirty and
no place for a newborn to be

And everything was the same, but everything was so different

We now skip ahead to when this baby became a man, a teacher with revolutionary ideas

In a time of war, he was calling for peace and unity. In a time of corrupt politicians he was speaking out on justice and condemning corruption.

He was standing up for those in poverty and helping those who were sick. In every way, he was contrary to the culture in which he lived.

We all know about this man. You’ve probably heard his teachings, in fact, and thought he was a good person

Do for others what you would like them to do for you.

If you have two coats, give one away to the one who has none.

If someone slaps you, don’t hit them back, turn the other cheek instead.

These words of peace speak to our own generation even though they were spoken over two thousand years ago

In a time when everything was changing to new, he was returning to the old ways, and he made them new again.

In hatred he loved. He did not just love his own, but loved all, even those who were trying to kill him.

Yet he was not afraid to stand up for what was right against the tyrants who would easily abuse the poor

Even when he put himself at risk and was threatened continually

He lived in the
culture, but was
outside of it: revolutionary and traditional at the same time

His way of
challenging the beliefs of the day made him fall out of favor with the leaders through no fault of his own

They tried to silence him, but his message was full of unstoppable truth that had caught on fire

So they came to get him one night when he was with just a few of his followers

He did not resist them, his time on earth was coming to a close

To the end he loved and gave himself up for a cause

To the end he loved and gave himself up for a cause

He believed that by his death he would save many people

How so?

Was he a good, wise teacher or a lunatic with a lost cause?

Maybe its time to look at the story once more
