HIGHLIGHTS
In 2013, alumna Lisa Trott '91, Stephanie Wallace '03, and Jennifer Fusco '09 were each named Teacher of the Year for all three Charleston-area school districts.
In 2014, Jaime Cunningham '09 was named district Teacher of the Year for Charleston County and Gay Owens '88 was named district Teacher of the Year for Florence 5 School District.
Josh Hall ’14 says his decision to become a school teacher was largely influenced by the many mentors who, throughout his life, encouraged him and provided a positive example for him to emulate.
First generation college student Meagan Dunham '17 received two scholarships that are helping her dreams come true. Dunham said, "It made me realize, I can go as far as I want to go."
Azikiwe Chandler '14 (M.A.T in elementary education and Jeremy Warren Vann Scholarship recipient) plans to open a public charter school that will nurture young black men, allowing them to thrive. Chandler envisions a boarding school with a multicultural focus that offers parents and students an alternative to negative home or community environments and surrounds them with positive role models, loving discipline and high expectations.
Mariana Hay '82 was honored with the 2014 Distinguished Alumna Award!
This award recognizes alumni who have made significant contributions to their profession or to their community over a long period of time.
Julie Dingle Swanson ’76 has received a $2.3 million dollar federal grant to train teachers to identify and academically develop gifted and talented students in low-income elementary schools.
Zac Viscidi '10 recently authored a piece for the College of Charleston Magazine about Dean Frances Welch. Viscidi is an English Language Arts teacher at Sanders-Clyde Creative Arts School in Charleston.
In 2013, Chuck and Sara Davis donated $250,000 to support future teachers and create the Jeremy Warren Vann Scholarship.
In 2014, a scholarship was established in honor of Dorie and George Spaulding to support outstanding students in the School of Education, Health and Human Performance. The first recipient, Alyssa Uber, is a junior studying Physical Education Teacher Education.
In 2014, the Gangarosa Fund for International Public Health Experiences was established to support international educational experiences for CofC
public health majors. The first recipients of this fund, Maclain Borsich '15 and Elizabeth Tenney '16 are interning with Deep Springs International in rural Haiti this summer.
