Who's involved in bullying?

The bully, the bullied and the bystander

Who's involved?

  • The bully - repeatedly acts aggressive to the victim
  • The bullied - the target of the bullying.
  • The bystander - is present during the bullying, but does nothing to stop it

What is bullying?

  • Bullying is a form of repeated aggression used from a position of power. It can be physical (hitting, shoving), verbal (name calling, mocking), or social (excluding others from a group, spreading rumours).

Successful bullying prevention programs....

  • define bullying
  • support students who are bullied and those who bully
  • embed bullying prevention within the curriculum
  • focus on developing healthy relationships skills and explain the bullying dynamic

Successful bullying prevention programs...

  • address gender-based differences
  • strong leadership from teachers and principals
  • recognize bullying as a relationship problem that requires relationship-based solutions
  • involve parents
  • promote respect, tolerance, and empathy

Creating a safe, inclusive classroom climate

  • Raise awareness. - Educate & encourage bullied students to seek help, & for those who witness bullying to speak out about it
  • Keep an eye out. - Pay attention to how your students are treating each other. Watch for students who seem to need help.
  • Assert your authority. Zero tolerance.

What you can do in the classroom

  • Model appropriate relationship skills
  • Supervise, manage, and monitor children’s interactions
  • Promote positive group activities
  • Promote positive attitudes and values
  • Address early signs of relationship problems to prevent bullying
  • Have students sign anti-bullying pledge

If a parent comes to you about bullying

  • Investigate the bullying immediately
  • Meet with bullied child to discuss bullying & how to keep the child safe.
  • Meet with the children who are suspected of taking part in the bullying. Make it clear - Zero tolerance for bullying.

If a parent comes to you about bullying...

  • Develop logical consequences for the bully
  • Contact parents
  • Continue to monitor the situation
