Matter and Energy

  • Recognize that energy from the Sun is made into chemical energy through photosyntesis
  • Diagram the flow of energy through living systems. Ex: food chains, food webs, and energy pyramids
  • Explain the cycling of matter in living systems, carbon cycle etc.

Physical and Chemical Changes

  • Identify that all organic compounds are made of Carbon
  • Know the difference between chemical and physical changes in the digestive system
  • Recognize that large molecules such as carbohydrates are broken down into smaller molecules like sugars.

Force, Motion, and Energy

  • Study situation where work is being done with different amounts of force
  • Study the transformation of energy. Ex: chemical to heat
  • Demonstrate how forces affect motion in everyday life. Ex: emergence of seedlings, geotropism, turgor pressure

Natural and Human impact on Earth

  • Describe how catastrophic events impact ecosystems; floods, hurricanes, tornadoes
  • Study the effects of weathering and erosion in ecoregions of Texas
  • Model the effects of human activity on groundwater and surface water

Solar System

  • Analyze characteristics of our Solar system that allows life to exist
  • Identify how manned space exploration was made possible

Organisms and Enviroment

  • Observe how different environments support a variety of organisms
  • Describe how biodiversity supports an ecosystem
  • Study the role of ecological succesion

Inherited Traits

  • Study how organisms traits are inherited and vary through many generations
  • Examine dichotomous keys to identify organisms structures
  • Identify changes in genetic traits through the process of natural selection and selective breeding

Cells to Organisms

  • Investigate the adaptations of organisms: why do fish have gills etc.
  • Differentiate the structure of a plant and animal cell

Internal and External Stimulus

  • Know how an organisms maintains balance in response to internal and external stimuli
  • Investigate phototropism, and fight or flight
  • Homeostasis

Characteristics of Organisms

  • Know how reproduction passes traits through genetic material
  • Compare the diversity of offspring from sexual or asexual reproduction
  • Define heredity as the passage of genetic material through generations
