How Do You Research Something?

Plagiarism

  • Rule(s)- When you are presenting a fact that is NOT common knowledge, always cite the source. When you write about an idea, make clear whose idea it is. And when using someone else's exact words, use quotation marks.

Plagiarism Examples

  • Example- Plagiarism is when you present someone else's work as your own and don't give them credit for it.
  • Non-Example- When you give credit to the person's work that you used.

Paraphrasing

  • Rule- Paraphrasing is when you restate something in your own words, the author's words, or ideas without changing the meaning of it. They are usually the same length, but you always need to cite, or else that would be plagiarism.

Paraphrasing Examples/Non-Examples

  • Example- You read the original paragraph a few times. Then, you right the main ideas and put them together to make it paragraph.
  • Non-Example- What you're NOT supposed to do when you are paraphrasing is just change a few words, rearranging words in different order, or just completely deleting sentences or words out.

Citations

  • Rule- When you cite a website, paragraph, or book that you used as a source.

Citation Examples

  • Example- Last Name, First Name. Title(Underlined). Place of publication: Publisher, Copyright Date
  • Non-Example- I got this from Haiku Deck. A non example is where you don't do it right or when just don't do a citation at all. That is called plagiarism.
