WHAT HURRICANES ARE

  • A hurricane is a massive storm that forms on water
  • If a hurricane does significant damage, the name will be retired.
  • The hurricane will also be replaced with another name.

  • The Atlantic hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30
  • Most hurricanes occur in fall months.
  • The Eastern pacific hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30

WHAT KIND OF DAMAGE DOES HURRICANES CREATE

  • Floods, loss of homes, heavy rain
  • Car damage, building damage, loss of lives
  • Strong winds, beach erosion

HOW ARE HURRICANES MEASURED, DECTECTED OR FORCASTED

  • Category 1 : pressure is 74-95 millibars. Damage is minimum
  • Category 2 : pressure is 96-110 millibars. Damage is moderate
  • Category 3 : pressure is 111- 130 millibars. Damage is extensive
  • Category 4 : pressure is 131- 155 millibars. Damage is extereme
  • Category 5 : pressure is 155 millibars. Damage is catostrophic

HOW TO STAY SAFE FROM HURRICANES

  • Have a disaster plan and pet plan
  • Board windows and bring in outdoor objects
  • Make sure you know which country or parish you live in and know where all the evacution routes are
  • If your house is being evacuated, follow the task immeditaly

FACTS ABOUT HURRICANES

  • They travel at speeds up to 70-200 mph
  • The last about a week
  • The center of the eye is the calmest part of the hurricane

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A WATCH AND A WARNING

  • Hurricane watch : the watch should trigger your familys disaster plan, and protective measure should be indicated
  • Hurricane warning : hurricane conditions are expected in your area within 24 hours. Once this warning has been issued, your family should be in the process of completeing important actions
