TORNADO OCCURANCE
Tornadoes occur mainly during the summer, commonly from 3 p.m. - 9 p.m. in places where the wind is very strong, in states like Kansas, Nebraska, Texas, and more.

A TORNADO'S COMING!

  • Tornadoes are measured using the Fujita Scale.
  • Tornadoes are detected using radar manned by meteorologists.
  • Tornadoes are forecasted on the news and radios.

TORNADO DAMAGE

  • Tornadoes can create damage paths up to 50 miles long!
  • Tornadoes can destroy buldings and hurl vehicles.
  • The scale goes from F0 - F12. F0 does little damage, while F12 is catastrophic.

  • Tornado warning- Tornado is either on the ground or has been detected by a doppler radar.
  • Keeping a safety kit with water, food, and extra flashlights.

ARE TORNADOES A THREAT TO NYC?
Most tornadoes are not a threat to NYC. This is because the three different air masses needed to make a tornado don't usually come together over New York.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO STUDY THE WEATHER?
So if people including your own family are threatened by a bad storm, you can be prepared. Also, you will know how to teach future generations how to be prepared in a time of crisis.
