JAMES TOWN, MASSACHUSETTES BAY, GEORGIA, PENNSYLVANIA, AND MARYLAND.

JAMES TOWN PART 1

  • 1607- Founding date
  • Gold- reason for founding
  • Harsh conditions- harsh conditions made it very hard for the settlers
  • John smith - a "hero" of the colony, came from England to help organize and save the colony
  • John Rolfe- father of tobacco

JAMES TOWN PART 2

  • Shipping ports- after tobacco saved the colony it thrived with a boosting economy, later gained shipping ports
  • 1619- first governing Virginia assembly
  • Slaves- first being white indentured servants it soon transfers to Africans bought from the Dutch
  • 1646- first "peace treaty" between English and natives, lead to even more events in history like the trail of tears.
  • Rich boys- young rich men came to the new colony hoping to still be sitting in the lap of luxury, wrong.o

MASSACHUSETTES PART 2

  • 1630- Founding Date
  • Puritans- puritans and separatists came to MA to get away from the "taints"
  • Salem witch trials- and they thought the saints were bad, this was worse. Tested and killed we on blamed to be witches
  • John Winthrop- main Puritan, banned the in pure
  • 1691- Plymouth became part of Massachusettes

MASSACUSETTES PART 2

  • General court: government of the colony
  • First towns- Massachusettes bay had established some of the first towns.
  • Mass. Act of 1642- parents and family member got job to support religon and law
  • Freeman: a member of the church and government, voted.

PENNSYLVANIA PART 1

  • William Penn: founder
  • Great treaty of 1682: made peace with the Delaware Indians.
  • Climate: hotter summer meant several diseases
  • Slavery: Penn like black slaves over white indentured slaves.
  • Charles the 2: granted the charter to Penn

PENNAYLVANIA PART 2

  • Farming: had great soil for agriculture
  • Didn't believe in predestination and violence
  • 1682- framed the gov. Which created to houses of legislature
  • Proprietary colony: Penn and several others owned Pennsylvania
  • Quakers- religious group that lived there

GEORGIA PART 1

  • James Oglethorpe: founder of Georgia
  • Debtor colony: where people in debt sent to live
  • Slavery: had the largest slave population
  • Buffer: made to separate Spanish Florida and the other colonies
  • Crops: grew mainly rice and indigo

GEORGIA PART 2

  • Climate: good crap weather
  • Exports: exported silk and wine
  • Government- royal colony so the government was in England
  • Religon- tolerant to everyone
  • Jobs- had fur trappers, fishers, and ship builders

  • Tobacco- main crop like Virginia
  • Native Americans- traded and became friends
  • Feudal system: how lord Baltimore gave land to people
  • Catholic: main religion, the colony was founded for Catholics
  • Plantations: means crops, plantations, and slaves

  • Toleration act of 1649- became tolerant to all Christians
  • St. Mary's: first settlement
  • Lord Baltimore - founder of Maryland
  • Legal slavery: both white servants and African slaves were legal.
