WHat is a 3rd degree burn?

  • A third degree burn is a burn that damages all three layers of the skin, and sometimes the tissue below the skin.

Symptoms:

  • Symptoms include black or white charred skin; may be temporarily numb due to damaged nerves in the skin.

aspects to look at when finding treatments:

  • Extent of the burn
  • Cause of the burn
  • Location
  • Age
  • And medical history

Most common treatments:

  • Removing dead skin and tissue from the burned area
  • IV fluids containing electrolytes
  • Antibiotic ointments or cream
  • Pain medication (if not the worst case)

OTHER TREATMENTS FOR MORE SEVERE CASES INCLUDE...

Skin Grafting:

  • To take a piece of unburned skin which is surgically removed and then taken to cover the burned area
  • Performed in the operating room

EMERGENCY SERVICES MAY...

  • Give oxygen to help the person breathe
  • They may also be wrapped in dry bandages
  • Again... dead skin may be surgically removed from the burned/ charred area

At home trEatments include:

  • Take pain medication
  • Apply bandages and change out every two to three times a day
  • Keep burned area dry
  • Go to the doctor and seek emergency help

Seek medical help if:

  • If your burn changes color
  • If fluid leaks, swelling increases, or begins to have a foul odor
  • You have a fever
