Matter Phase Changes Review

BY CONNOR HOPKINS

Matter

  • Phase changes happen with a change of energy or temperature
  • When more kinetic energy is added, the particles move faster
  • Ex:
  • Boiling, freezing, melting

Solids and liquids

  • Solids have particles close to each other
  • Liquids have room to slide and glide
  • Solid->liquid: melting
  • Liquid->Solid: freezing
  • Melting/freezing point: temperature at which a substance melts/freezes

Liquids and Gases

  • Gases have room to move freely
  • Liquid->Gas Boiling(bubbles)/Evaporation over time
  • Gas->Liquid Condensation

Solid and Gas

  • Solid->gas: Sublimation
  • ex: Dry ice
  • Gas-solid: depostion
  • ex: frost
