PRESENTATION OUTLINE

3TYPES OF CARBS

MONO/DI/POLYSACCHARIDES

MONOSACCHARIDES

  • Carbohydrates composed of single sugar units.
  • These are the smallest carbohydrate molecules.
  • The three monosaccharides are glucose, fructose, and galactose.

DISACCHARIDES

  • These are made up of two sugar units
  • The body splits the disaccharides into monosaccharides during digestion.
  • The three disaccharides are sucrose, maltose, and lactose

POLYSACCHARIDES

  • Are carbohydrates made of many sugar units.
  • These are linked in long, straight chains or branched chains
  • Like disaccharides these are broken down into monomers during digestion
  • Starches and fiber are the polysaccharides.
