John D. Rockefeller

  • July 8, 1839 – May 23, 1937
  • Founder of the University of Chicago and Rockefeller University
  • He was a co-founder of the Standard Oil Company.
  •  Dominated the oil industry and was the first great U.S. business trust.

  • Rockefeller’s father  traveled the country selling herbal-remedies, gaining him the nickname “Doc Rockefeller.
  • Married Laura Celestia Spelman
  • Had 5 children; Elizabeth, Alice, Alta, Edith, and John Davison rockefeller

Andrew Carnegie

  • Self made steel tycoon
  • Born November 25, 1835 in Scotland
  • Moved to the U.S. at 13 years old.

Carnegie Continued...

  • Started making investments while doing railroad work.
  • Stopped railroad work in 1865 to look at different business interests.
  • Started Carnegie Steel Company.
  • Revolutionized steel production in the United States

Cornelius Vanderbilt

  • Born May 27, 1794
  • Industrialist in Railroads and shipping. 
  • Awarded military contract to provide supplies along Hudson River.
  • Purchased railroad in New York and offered good service and low fares.

  • Left most of his money to his son and his son's sons.
  • Left a very small remainder to his second wife and eight daughters.
