  • 4.3 million african americans migrated to the Northern US.
  • From 1940-1970

WHY DID THEY MOVE? (K1)

JIM CROW LAWS

  • The states in the South forcing Jim Crow Laws.
  • They had use inferior utilities.
  • They were refused service at public places
  • An African American was hanged,burned,or lynched every 4 days.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES (K1)

  • The north had jobs available in factories.
  • The wages and working conditions were better

  • Three major rail lines were used to transport them
  • People living in the central south used the Illinois central railroad.
  • People living in the east used the Seaboard Air line
  • People in Texas or Louisiana use the Union Pacific Rail line.

  • Many northern whites didn't welcome african americans.
  • They had trouble finding houses to buy or rent
  • Many whites moved away from places that welcomed african americans

WHAT WAS THEIR IMPACT? (K4)

  • They established thriving independent communities
  • They had an urban identity
  • Many influencial african americans come from families from this migration.
  • There was a larger african american middle class
  • They filled professions such as lawyers or doctors
