WHAT IS IT?

  • This Amendment prohibits the government from using the age of someone (who is over the age of 18)to deny them being able to vote.

WHEN?

  • Became part of the constitution July 1, 1971.
  • 3months and 8 days after after it was submitted to be ratified.
  • Was submitted March 23rd 1971

  • Jan 7th 1954: state of the Union address
  • Jun 22nd 1970: the law is passed
  • Mar 23rd 1917: House Votes
  • Jul 1st 1971: last state
  • Jul 7th 1971: It's Official
  • Nov 7th 1971: Ratified after adoption
  • Nov 7th 1972: Election of 1972
  • Jan 1st 1970-Dec 31st 1971:

WHY?

  • They thought that if your old enough to go to war your old enough to vote

  • It was democratic
  • Voter turnout may increase
  • More voices could mean more innovation

  • Young people tend to be easily swayed
  • They may not be mature enough to vote
  • They are not informed enough to vote
