primary question

HOW ARE ISTE NETS INTEGRATED INTO CURRICULUM TOIMPROVE 21ST CENTURY SKILLS?
This is my primary research question

How do we learn in the 21st century?

  • Will technology help one learn?
  • How can we integrate technology into our curriculum?
  • What are 21st century skills?
  • What are ISTE standards?
The essential questions of my research lead me to question how differently the education system can be transformed with technology and an emphasis on 21st century skills

How do all of these connect?

The term "21st-century skills" is generally used to refer to certain core competencies such as collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving that advocates believe schools need to teach to help students thrive in today's world.

First one has to define what 21st century skills are:

this definition can be open to interpretation
Sarah Brown Wessling simply defines "Twenty-first- century learning embodies an approach to teaching that marries content to skill."

Milton Chen also states "It is simply and effort to define modern learning using modern tools."

ISTE Standards are the standards for learning, teaching and leading in the digital age and are widely recognized and adopted worldwide.

ITSE stands for The International Society for Technology in Education. The ITSE Standards were formally know as NET, which stood for National Educational Technology Standards. There are ITSE Standards for students, teachers, and administrators.

But I bet that as an educator you were unaware of these...

As a future technology integrator, I see how ISTE Standards can provide the effective skills necessary for students and teachers. Technology is omnipresent and ITSE can provide the guidelines needed to help navigate through the 21st century.

So that is the reason why I wanted to do my presentation on 21st century skills and technology. I am a graduate at SNHU to get my masters in technology integration. I wish to bring the motivation to use technology into the classroom not only because I am a technophile (someone who really loves technology) but because I can see the benefits it provides students.

Maximizing impact

  • Now is the time to focus on WHAT students need to learn
  • HOW to deliver results from a 21st century education system
  • This CAN be done with the integration of technology as a fundamental building block
Though my first piece of research, I found a document on how technology can be the pivotal role in a 21st century education system.

There is a call to action for the integration of technology for 3 reasons,

1. use technology comprehensively to develop proficiency in 21st century skills

2. use technology comprehensively to support innovative teaching and learning

3. use technology comprehensively to create robust education support systems

ELEMENTS OF 21ST CENTURY LEARNING

  • Six key elements
  • Nine steps to build momentum
  • Emphasize core subjects & learning skills
  • Make a difference with the technology
The six key elements of 21st century learning are:
1 emphasize core subjects
2 emphasize learning skills
3 use 21st century tools to develop learning skills
4 teach and learn in a 21st century context
5 teach and learn 21st century context
6 use 21st century assessments that measure 21st century skills

There are nine steps to build momentum:
1 embrace a powerful vision of public education that included 21st century skills
2 align leadership, management and resources with educational goals
3 use this tool to assess where schools are now
4 develop priorities for 21st century skills
5 develop a professional development plan for 21st century skills
6 make sure students have equitable access to a 21st century education
7 begin developing assessments to measure student progress in 21st century skills
8 collaborate with outside partners
9 plan collectively and strategically for the future

The important thing is to use the technology to make a better difference in education

Blogging in the classroom

  • Web 2.0 tools are a way to integrate technology
  • Blogging provides collaboration between students
  • Teacher-Student feedback increases
I found a lesson plan where a blog was used within the classroom to develop 21st century skills.

The teacher found that there was better communication between the students. They were receiving many comments when assigned blogging buddies. There was also better teacher feedback, it was quicker and more constructive.

The students were motivated and found it to be rewarding.

more questions

  • The motivation of educators [the technophobes]
  • How to increase awareness of ITSE Standards to teachers
From my research I have come up with a few more questions.

Such as the assessment of these skills

how to motivate the teachers unwilling to integrate technology

and how to properly make teachers and students more aware of the ITSE standards

Now off to do more research to find more resources to help teachers integrate ITSE Standards to improve 21st Century Skills
