POL POT 1975- 1979

  •  Pol Pot attempted to remove Cambodia from the modern world 
  • Wanted to establish an agrarian utopia {society based on agriculture}
  • The Khmer Rouge aimed to 'purify' society
  • Wanted to transform the population into revolutionary worker peasants
  • Attempted to create a classless society

What tyrannical things did he do?

  • Created the Cambodian Genocide (1975-1979)
  • Caused the deaths of 1.5 million people (from 8 million)
  • Killing fields: death from malnutrition/overwork/disease
  • Killed anyone who was disloyal to him (axed or shot)
  • Attack on minority culture

  • Everyone was forced to work – even the children
  • Ex-soldiers were killed with their families
  •  Killed all doctors, teachers, old government officials,
  • monks, police officers and lawyers of the Old society

was he brought to justice?

  • No
  • Pol Pot died in 1998 from heart attack 

saddam hussein

  • 16 July 1979 – 23 March 1991;  29 May 1994 – 9 April 2003
  • Those in support enjoyed the benefits of oil and wealth
  • Those against him faces torture and execution 
  • Was arrested following the year of the Ramadan Revolution 
  • This was for fighting in the Ba'ath party

  • While in prison, he was appointed secretary of Regional Command
  • In the years that followed, his political power rose 
  • Was a large contributor to modernising Iraq's industry
  • Nationalised Iraq's oil industry 

what tyrannical things did he do?

  • During his rule, more than 200,000 people were killed
  • Eliminated all his political foes
  • He used terror and fear to stay in power
  • Use chemical weapons against Kurds within Iraq
  • Gassing of Halabja, killing around 5000 people (March 1988)

was he brought to justice?

  • Yes
  • Sentenced to be hanged on the 5th November 2006 
  • Was hanged on the 30th December 2006 
  • Found to be guilty of crimes against humanity
