20 WW2 Vocabulary Words

Axis Powers

  • The three large enemy powers during World War 2, the axis was made up of Germany, Italy and Japan.

Allied Powers

  • The large allied nations fighting Germany consisted of the United States, Britain and Russia.

Blitzkrieg

  • Hitler's military tactic, blitzkrieg was the harsh offensive tactics Hitler used during the war. It consisted of heavy bombings and a grueling offensive.

Manhattan Project

  • A secret project from the United States in which they developed the Atomic Bomb.

Kamikaze

  • A form of offense from Japanese pilots, when they would run out of resources to attack with in their planes, they would dive into Allies in a last attack.

Winston Churchill

  • The prime minister of Britain, Churchill is famous for giving hope to the English during the harshest times of the war.

Genocide

  • The attempted extermination of an entire people.

Holocaust

  • The genocide of Jewish people during world war two. Germany's attempt at genocide resulted in the death of millions.

Appeasement

  • The act of nations giving over to the enemy nations. France, for instance, appeased to Germany.

Concentration Camp

  • The work camps where Jewish people were sent to, to work and be killed.

Nuremberg Trials

  • The trials of Nazi's for their war crimes after the war had ended. (One of my personal favorite moments in history)

Stalingrad

  • A long battle that took place in Russia between the U.S.S.R and Germany. Germany's attempt at taking the city was, luckily, unsuccessful.

D-Day #13

  • The invasion of France by the allied powers. This battle was pivotal in the Allies attempts at regaining Europe.

Hiroshima

  • The first city to be hit with a nuclear bomb. This occurred in 1945 and was hit with the Atomic Bomb by the United States.

Adolf Hitler

  • The dictator of Germany, Hitler started World War Two with his invasion of Poland.

Benito Mussolini

  • Italy's dictator, Mussolini would eventually pay for his actions when, the Italian people executed him for his actions

Joseph Stalin

  • The leader of the U.S.S.R, Stalin starved millions of his people and only entered the war when Hitler broke their agreement and invaded Russia.

Dwight Eisenhower

  • U.S.A president during the majority of World War 2, Eisenhower died just before the end of the war in Europe.

Harry Truman

  • Truman took over presidency after Eisenhower's death and was the president who allowed the bombs to drop on Japan.

Nagasaki

  • The second city to be bombed by the United States, after this, Japan soon surrendered, ending the war.
