ENGLAND IN THE 1800'S

GOVERNMENT

  • There was political unrest during this time.
  • A new government was created to provide reforms.
  • Many groups were formed to provide changes as well.
  • The first police force was formed
  • Reforms that were made included voting rights and say in government.

EDUCATION

  • Most children did not attand school
  • Only rich boys went to school
  • Poor children worked, as they couldnt afford school
  • Girls did not attend school, they did household work
  • However, girls were sometimes homeschooled

SOCIAL CLASSES

  • Three groups:
  • Aristocrats
  • Middle Class
  • Lower Classes
  • There was social unrest in England at this time

RELIGION

  • Catholicism was popular in this time
  • Importance of the Church was diminishing
  • The Church of England had to reform many of its doctrines
  • This was due to the push for reforms
  • Although not as important, Church now had unity after the reforms.

ECONOMY

  • In the 1800's, England was an economic power
  • It was the leader of the Industrial Revolution
  • Main producer of many machines, which helped the economy
  • Living standards increased as well during this time
  • Leader in international banking and trade

MILITARY

  • British regements fought many signifigant battles
  • These ranged from that of Napoleon all the way to India
  • Regiments also policed the empire during this time.
  • Battles include Waterloo, Crimea, and the Indian Mutiny
  • Many military traditions were developed during this time

IMPORTANT EVENTS

  • The War of 1812
  • Parliamentary Reform Acts
  • Rugby was invented
  • The Union Jack becomes the official flag
  • Reform acts and repeals
