THE NINETEENTH AMENDMENT WAS RATIFIED ON AUGUST 18, 1920.

THIS AMENDMENT GUARANTEES ALL AMERICAN WEOMEN THE RIGHT TO VOTE.

This amendment was proposed because women in America did not get the right to vote. They thought it was unfair that only men got many rights. Men thought that they were stronger than women and could do much more things than women could.

PROS OF THIS AMENDMENT.

  • Women got their right to vote.
  • Women could now attend college.
  • Women could now own property.
  • Women could now be legal guardiands of their own children.
  • Women got to have a say in the government.

CONS OF THIS AMENDMENT.

  • Men still did not view women as equals.
  • Women couldn't fight in wars.

One of the times that this amendment has been challenged in court is in 1872. A woman named Virginia Minor tried to register to vote in her home state of Missouri. The laws of Missouri did not allow that so she got turned down. Ms.Minor sued the state of Missouri, and made the argument that the rights guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment also prohibited states from denying it to women. Ms.Minor did not achieve her goal until this amendment was passed.
