Social- Kent State Massacre
On May 4, 1970, National Guardsmen stationed at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio fired upon a student protest, killing four and wounding nine. The Ohio National guard fired 67 rounds in a period of 13 seconds. The students were protesting the Cambodian Campaign, which was announced by President Nixon on April 30. The event further skewed public opinion on the role of the U.S. in Vietnam.

Political- Roe vs Wade
Ruled unconstitutional a state law that banned abortions except to save the life of the mother.
The court ruled that states were forbidden from outlawing or regulating abortion performed in the first trimester as well as other stipulations. It affected the US by allowing abortion which in turn caused further outrage and protest which still goes on today. The landmark decision was a ruling of 7-2.

intellectual- On 3 April 1973 when Martin Cooper, a Motorola researcher and executive, made the first mobile telephone call from handheld subscriber equipment, placing a call to Dr. Joel S. Engel of Bell Labs. The creation of the DynaTAC cellular telephone would change the world and how it communicated.

technological- 1971 Floppy Disk introduced
In 1971, IBM introduced the floppy disk commercially. The floppy disk was the result of a task given to an IBM storage development center in San Jose, California. The device made use of read/write semiconductor memory for microcode. The floppy disk made it easy for people to store information as well as transport it.

Jaws
In 1975, Jaws became one of the most well known movies and one of the highest grossing of all time. The movie made $470,653,000 at the box office. Jaws, which is a suspenseful thriller, swept the nation and became a number one hit most known by its theme song which was used in the film to indicate the impending appearance of the great white shark.

Radical geography emerged during the 1970s as the inadequacies of behavioralist methods became clear. It sought to counter the positivist quantitative methods with normative techniques drawn from Marxist theory: quantitative methods, it argued, were not useful unless alternatives or solutions were given to problems.

economic- 1973 oil crisis
In response to the Yom Kippur War, OAPEC placed an oil embargo causing oil to be of limited supply in the US. The embargo caused the need for smaller, more fuel efficient cars versus the standard 6.5 liter V8 that was popular in the states. The auto industry started to produce cars with smaller more fuel efficient 4 liter engines.

religious-
The 1970s saw a massive change in the religious practices and participation of people in the United States. There were a variety of reasons for these changes including the Vietnam War, the rise of Second Wave Feminism and the advent of the birth control pill which shifted attitudes about sex. Other reasons for changes in religion were due to the enormous growth the Evangelical movement and the beginnings of televangelism.

military- US pulls out of vietnam
On January 27, 1973, the parties agreed to a cease-fire the following day, the withdrawal of all U.S. forces, the release of all prisoners of war, and the creation of an international force to keep the peace. The South Vietnamese were to have the right to determine their own future, but North Vietnamese troops stationed in the south could remain. By the end of 1973, almost all U.S. military personnel had left South Vietnam.
