1968 STUDENT WALKOUTS

CONDITIONS

  • Schools had a terrible record of educating Mexican Americans.
  • Classrooms were overcrowded, teachers had little knowledge, and less access to extra curricular activities.

ACTIONS

  • 10,000 students at different schools walked out in protest for their education.
  • By March 6, the number of students who walked out of Garfield in protest was 2,700 activists.

OBSTACLES

  • Over 50% of Chicanos and Chinese students were pushed out of schools, which lead to many of the students failing.
  • Police arrested 13 activists involved in protest, they were thrown in jail.

ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Federal Government got involved by stepping up and finding a result to the protest.
  • They responded to students by compelling the school board to provide bilingual, bicultural education, improved testing programs and additional celebration.
