  • Bull Connor was in charge of both the Birmingham Police and Fire Dept.
  • He was also a brutal man

  • Dr. King & the S.C.L.C. arrive in Birmingham to organize protests from the 16th St. Baptist Church.
  • Dr. King and thousands of others will be arrested for marching without a permit.
  • While in jail, King writes his famous "Letter from Birmingham Jail".

  • Numbers of protesters started to shrink.
  • Rev. James Bevel had the idea of using students.
  • This started the Children's March

Children's March - Birmingham

  • Code named "D-Day", Students left their schools and walked to the 16th St. Baptist Church on May 2.
  • Students move throughout the city to begin protests peacefully.
  • Almost 1000 students are arrested.

  • Day 2 of the march will be different - Commissioner Connor meant to threaten/bully/intimidate the students to stop protesting
  • He had the fire dept turn their hoses up to maximum against the children, he also authorized police beatings with batons and the use of dogs

  • By now the national and international press was reporting on the violent treatment of the non-violent students.
  • The jails were overcrowded and students were being held at the fairgrounds.
  • Pressure mounted and City Council and business leaders gave in.
  • Birmingham would be de-segregated

  • Birmingham school board tried to expel students for participating in the March
  • 16th St. Baptist Church was bombed in September - 4 young girls were murdered in the blast
