PROPOSAL & RATIFICATION

  • Proposed December 18, 1917.
  • Ratified January 16,1919.
  • Woodrow Wilson was President.
  • The 21st amendment revoked the 18th.
  • Was ultimately a bad idea.

TIME PERIOD IN HISTORY

  • The Prohibition took place in the 1920's-1930's.
  • The Great Depresion
  • Mafia and Gangsters (Al Capone)
  • Jazz age
  • Klu Klux Klan

WHY WAS THE AMENDMENT PROPOSED?

  • Temperance groups were pushing the idea, and were at an all time high.
  • Was thought to lower the the crime rate.
  • Was thought to increase work productivity
  • They also needed the grain for the war effort to make alchol.
  • Would raise the economy.

HOW THE AMENDMENT AFFECTED CULTURE

  • Crime rate rose dramatically.
  • Speakeasies were formed.
  • Illegal gangs started distributing alchol.
  • Couldn't enforce a drinking limit.
  • Couldn't enforce a drinking age limit.

OLMSTEAD VS. U.S

  • Roy Olmstead was a police officer who had accepted bribes.
  • He eventually became a bootlegger.
  • Known as "King of the Northwest Bootleggers"
  • Became the largest bootlegger at the time.
  • Was caught due to a phone tap in 1928.

HOW DOES THIS AMENDMENT EFFECT SOCIETY

  • It was revoked so it doesn't effect society anymore.
  • In the 1920's-1930's crime rate rose.
  • Gangs were formed, distributing alchol.
  • Illegal black markets rose to power.
  • Alcohol distributing jobs were terminated affecting the economy.

HOW AMENDMENT WAS PASSED

  • Was passed using the 1st method.
  • 2/3 vote in each house of congress.
  • 26/27 have been approved this way.
