The Unions Strengths

  • Richer and more technologically advanced: “About 90% of the nations manufacturing and most of its banks were in the North.” This meant they had more money for trade.
  • Geographical Advantages: more farms to produce food for troop. Land contained iron, coal, copper, and gold.
  • more soldiers to fight in the war.

  • Due to the fact that the north relied on factories, they were adapted to fit with war life (making bombs, bullets, etc...)
  • The North has a greater amount of population (21 million), which means more soldiers to fight in the war.

The Unions Weakness

  • Most of military leadership went back home to the south. This means that the North will have very little knowledge about war.

The Souths Strengths

  • Military leadership: most of America’s best officers were southerners who chose to fight.
  • Geographic Advantages: had a huge territory that the south could use to their advantage. It could easily make the north tired.

The Souths Weakness

  • Economy: Their economy could not support a long war. It had few factories to produce weapons.
  • Transportation: lacked railroads that needed to take troops places.
