PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE 16 AMENDMENT

BY KAITLYN NELSON

OPENING STATMENT

  • Congress has the power to take taxes on income
  • from whatever source derived

Causes

There was an income tax before the 16th amendment, and it was in effect during the Civil War. This income tax ended in 1866.The want for income tax on the rich was strong in 1909. So congress made the amendment.

Characteristics

Basically it's saying that the government can take taxes from income whether it be a salary from a job or dividend from a stock/investment and there is no need to share the revenue with the states. Also the census can’t be used as a basis for distributing taxes on people

Significance

This is significant because everybody who gets an income has to pay taxes. And are taxes goes to building roads, national defense and education. This changed lives for people in the past because a lot of there income went to taxes during wars.

Conclusion

I think the 16 th amendment is a good think. A little bit of our income goes to good things in the United States. It helps people and helps this country.
