- Passed by congress on February 26th, 1869
- Ratified on February 3, 1870

- Lyndon B Johnson signed the voting rights act.
- He signed it on August 6th 1965

- United States vs. Reese in 1876: that suffrage for citizens can not be restricted due to race color or the individual having previously been a slave
