13th Amendment

13th Amendment

  • North won Civil War.
  • Ratified in December 6, 1865.
  • North won Civil War.
  • The 13th amendment, which formally abolished slavery in the United States, passed the Senate on April 8, 1864, and the House on January 31, 1865

13th Amendment states

  • “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.”
  • Meaning that You can not treat people unfairly because of race.

White people made ways to disobey this law

  • They made Black Codes.
  • These laws had the intent and the effect of restricting African Americans' freedom, and of compelling them to work in a labor economy based on low wages or debt.
  • have a job.

Short Term Effects

  • Black Codes.
  • Reconstruction
  • Popular demonstration supporting the decision

Long Term Effects

  • More racial struggles
  • Could have jobs( if white boss let them.)
  • Freedman's Bureau help African Americans fit into society.

People Invovled

  • If you were for the Union, You love the Thirteenth Amendment.
  • If you were for Confederate, you hated the idea of black people being free.

Today, black people are still stereotype, and treated unfairly, but it has gotten better.

Thirteenth Amendment is significant to me because I wouldn't be here id it didn't exist.
