1080

GREER'S YELLOW-BLACK-RED HAT THINKING

YELLOW HAT

  • 1080 kills possums, stoats and rats, who have a massive impact on the survival of our native birds.
  • It helps the growth of our native trees, because it gets ride of the possums who eat the plants and trees.
  • Native animals have a better chance of breeding with less pests around.
  • After a 1080 drop in Okarito in 2011 the kea nesting success rate went from 51% to 100%.
  • The stoats eat the rats when they're poisoned, which is called a triple predator hit.

BLACK HAT

  • The poison can be dropped into water streams which could be used by humans.
  • A poisoned possum can travel up to 5km before it dies.
  • 1080 poison can kill non-targeted animals, such as dogs.
  • If it gets into the human body, you can die.
  • There is no antidote for 1080.
  • The 1080 can last up to six months in cool, dry weather

RED HAT

  • I agree that we should use 1080 because it is helping to increase the animal's survival rate.
  • It's giving the birds a chance to breed.
  • It's making our native trees more healthy.
  • It's increasing successful nesting percentages
  • Decreases the possum, stoat and rat populations.
