1. In 1873 Empire of Austria-Hungary

began an international exhibition of inventions

However, legal protection was absent so many didn't attend

As a response:

  • Austria incorporated law to offer temporary protection to participants
  • This would secure inventions, trademarks, and industrial designs
  • Led to formation of International Congress on Industrial Property

2. 11 States initially signed

The International Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property

As a result of that event, it is known as the Paris Convention

What Are They?

  • Paris Union countries must not favor patent holders who are citizens over those who are not
  • Patent holders: non-residents or non-nationals are given same rights as host country
