EIGHTH COMMANDMENT:

"You shall not steal."

I. HOW DO WE STEAL?

BOTTOM LINE:
by taking things that don't belong to us

EPHESIANS 4:28
Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.

So common and complex there are 124 synonyms for it

1. By DECEIVING CUSTOMERS

AMOS 8:5
You measure out your grain in false measures and weigh it out on dishonest scales.

GOOD NEWS TRANSLATION:
“You overcharge, use false measures, and fix the scales to cheat the customers."

2. By DEFRAUDING EMPLOYERS

COLOSSIANS 3:23
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.

“Average American adults work only 30 hours a week, and spend the rest of their hours doing things irrelevant to their jobs while at the workplace, such as daydreaming or chatting with fellow workers.” -- Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (2001)

TIME AT WORK

  • 64% use personal social media at work
  • waste an average of 2.1 hours per day on non-work related tasks
  • 36% of millenials and GenZ spend 2 hours or more just checking personal phones

3. By DELAYING PAYMENTS

LEVITICUS 19:13
Do not cheat or rob anyone. Always pay your hired workers promptly.

4. By DEFAULTING ON LOANS

PSALM 37:12
The wicked borrow and never repay.

5. By DUPLICITY WITH THE GOVERNMENT

ROMANS 13:6-7
This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Tax Avoidance

Tax Evasion

LEGALISTIC?

II. WHY SHOULD I BE HONEST?

1. Because I am BEING WATCHED

JOB 34:21-22
For God carefully watches the way people live; He sees everything they do. No darkness is thick enough to hide the wicked from His eyes.

2. Because I will REAP WHATEVER I SOW

GALATIANS 6:7
Don't be misled. Remember that you can't ignore God and get away with it. You will always reap what you sow!

PROVERBS 15:27 Dishonest money brings grief to the whole family, but those who hate bribes will live.

3. Because dishonesty DAMAGES MY CHARACTER

PROVERBS 10:2
Ill-gotten gain has no lasting value, but right living can save your life.

4. Because God REWARDS MY HONESTY

PROVERBS 28:20
A faithful person will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.

Arthur Conan Doyle's practical joke

"ALL IS FOUND OUT. FLEE AT ONCE."

MATTHEW 25:21
Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!
