  • The pilgrims didnt have silver buckles on their shoes.
  • And they didn't wear somber black clothes.
  • Their clothes turned out to be cheerful and bright.
  • The Native Americans clothes were woven blankets.
  • And the Englishmen didn't even call themselves pilgrims.

NATIVE AMERICANS

  • Before settlers came to the East coast the area was inhabited by Indians
  • The area surrounding the site of the first thanksgiving had been home of the wampanoag
  • The native people had harvested for thousands of generations
  • The area had been visited by European settlers before the arrival of the mayflower
  • The native people knew the land well and had fished and hunted their

MODERN THANKSGIVING

  • Modern Thanksgiving started to take place in the 19 century
  • It wasn't until 1863 when Abraham Lincoln declared two national Thanksgiving
  • Sarah Hale campaigned for an national thanksgiving in 1846
  • The harvest gathering of 1621 was incorrectly labeled
  • Thanksgiving was to give thanks to general blessing

NATIVE AMERICANS AND THANKSGIVING

  • The peace between the native americans and settlers lasted not that long
  • The wampanoag people do not share the popular reverence in New England
  • For them the holiday is a reminder of betrayal
  • Since 1970 native people have gathered at a memorial to remember them.
  • And they have not celebrated it ever since.
