SIMPLE HOME THEATER

55" TV, SONOS PLAYBAR, SONOS SUB, SONOS PLAY 3, $4K
LED & Plasma flat screen prices have come down dramatically in the past several years. The new Sonos 'PlayBar' speaker system I feel is a game changer. It eliminates the need for the A/V receiver and expensive control system, using the simple TV remote to control things.

With the addition of a Sonos Sub for deeper bass response, and a pair of Sonos Play3 speakers for rear surround, you have a complete Dolby Digital 5.1 home theater system. Perfect for the Bedroom or a small Media Room in your home.

SUPER SIZE ME

FLAT SCREEN TV'S ARE GETTING LARGER 70" 80" 90"
Sony now has available 70" & 84" televisions for a more enveloping experience in the Media Room.

OLED TV

GORGEOUS PICTURE, HUGE DYNAMIC RANGE, EXPENSIVE, 2014
OLED televisions have a gorgeous picture, huge dynamic range, and extremely vibrant color. In addition they are super model slim, lightweight, very energy efficient, with no motion blur when watching sports, and a wide viewing angle. What's not to love?

The bad news is they are proving very difficult to produce. Reports from LG and Samsung discuss production yields of only 10%!
LG has a 55" set at $10K and Samsung has a 55" for $9K. Both are available now.

My guess is they become more main stream in 2014.

4K/ULTRA HD

CURRENTLY NO CONTENT, SMALL ADVANTAGE @ 10', 4K BLU-RAY?
The flood of TVs with higher resolution than 1080p is inevitable, but at typical TV sizes, quadruple the pixels makes no difference in picture quality and are not worth the extra price today.

84-inch TVs are never going to be mainstream. Never. Ever. Just ask your wife or your wife's friends.
3840 X 2160

Currently very little content to play.
Small advantage @ 10' where most people sit.

Makes sense at 65" and larger sizes. Prices are coming down fast, 55" @ $3.5K
Look for 4K Blu-ray in late 2014.

DISCLESS FUTURE

PEOPLE LOVE HAVING WHAT THEY WANT, WHEN THEY WANT IT
I listen to Pandora quick mix all the time. I love sharing playlists on Rdio with my kids. HBO-Go is addictive. The fact is we all want to listen and watch what we want, when we want to.

Blu-ray DVD is currently the best video and audio content we can watch on our televisions. But new streaming codecs are coming that will allow higher content with less bandwidth.

High-definition music sounds more realistic and offers greater sonic detail than most commonly available online music. 192/24 & 96/24 audio downloads sound better than CD's.

802.11ac

NEW WIRELESS STANDARD, 1.3 GIGABIT, BEAMFORMING
802.11ac is the next big thing in wireless. It’s expected that by 2015 it will be so common that an estimated one billion devices will have it.

802.11ac provides Gigabit Wireless speeds for the first time. It is also referred to as fifth-generation 5G WiFi. Its about 4x faster than the currently prevalent 802.11n standard.

It is still 100% backwards compatible with older 11a/b/g/n devices. So all your existing WiFi enabled devices will still work.

H.265 COMPRESSION

POTENTIALLY CUTS BANDWIDTH NEARLY IN HALF
Stated as 2x as effective as H.264
Resolution up to 7680 × 4320
50% bitrate reduction with same quality as H.264 (smaller file sizes)
Improved noise levels, color gamut and dynamic range.

Same quality, half the bandwidth means a big hurdle to streaming more video has been cleared.

With H.265 just being accepted by the ITU it could be more than a year before it's integrated into any hardware. In fact, it's only just received first phase approval. It's not even finished yet.

Is the system simple to operate?
Can we make it simpler?
