PLAGIARISM

DEFINITION

  • To steal or pass of the ideas of another as your own
  • To use another's work without credit
  • To present as new something derived from an existing work

Brown Mackie considers plagiarism scholastic dishonesty and punishes it with sanctions up to and including expulsion.

TYPES OF PLAGIARISM

Cloning

  • Submitting another's work, word for word, as your own

Copying

  • Contains significant portions of text from a single source, without alteration

Find and Replace

  • Changing key words and phrases but retaining the essential content

  • Borrowing generously from your own previous work without citation
