THE FIRST SOCCER BALL

  • 1855 Charles Goodyear designed the first soccer ball
  • Made of Vulcanized rubber(Vulcanization (or vulcanisation) is a chemical process for converting natural rubber or related polymers into more durable materials via the addition of sulfur or other equivalent curatives or accelerators. These additives modify the polymer by forming cross-links (bridges) between individual polymer chains.
  • Designed Like today's basketball

FULLERENES

  • Large carbon molecules discovered in 1985 by Richard Smalley
  • fullerene is a molecule of carbon in the form of a hollow sphere
  • Fullerenes are similar in structure to graphite, which is composed of stacked graphene sheets of linked hexagonal rings

SIZE/SHAPE

  • They used to be shaped like a pigs bladder
  • What has changed drastically over the last 30 or so years is the material the ball is made of and the shape of the panels that make up the ball
  • Between 27-28 inches circumference

NOW A DAYS

  • A soccer ball now is made out of synthetic or real leather
  • Today's footballs are more complex than past footballs. Most modern footballs consist of twelve regular pentagonal and twenty regular hexagonal panels
  • Colors, unique designs and logos such as Nike, Adidas, puma, and brine are added to the balls to make them eye appealing and marketable.
  • Modern day footballs also come in a variety of colors

CREATIVITY

  • Chinese made their own with animal stuff together to form a sphere
  • Maya and aztec Indians in central Michigan made a rubber ball out of latex and rubber wood
  • The Egyptians invented a football made of seeds wrapped in linen. They also made balls out of animal skin or catgut for improved bouncing.
  • The Greeks, just like the Egyptians, created s ball wrapped in linen, but contains hair inside instead of seeds

  • This is what makes up the skin for the ball

  • FIFA approval mark assures that the balls have been tested for proper ball trajectory, shape, balance, bounce, water absorption and velocity at a independent laboratory
