PRONOUN- ANTECEDENT AGREEMENT

Antecedent: a word for which a pronoun states

("ante"- before)

Rule:
A singular pronoun must replace a singular noun. A plural pronoun must replace a plural noun.

EXAMPLES

  • Justin Bieber drank and did drugs, but he only spent a day in jail.
  • I scuffed my boots and had to polish them.
  • Will Henry eat the candy shaped sea horses or will he share with Marigold?

COMMON MISTAKES

  • Incorrect: Everyone has their own locker.
  • Correct: Everyone has his or her own locker.
  • Strategies: 1-Read the sentence out loud.
  • 2-Make sure pronouns match rules for plural and singular.
