why use rich tasks

For too long math education has been more about the product...and less about the process

we need to support students in their learning of the problem solving process

The focus needs to shift
from answer-getting to answer-seeking

Students think:
how can i get the answer the quickest, with the least amount of work.
they expect to be taught how to perform a procedure and then practice applying on several similar problems
But...they don't know what to do if the math they know is "hidden" from them.

Rich tasks provide the platform for teaching problem solving skills

problem solving skills/math practices need to be an explicit part of the curriculum.

some days content won't be the focus...it will be problem solving
