Preparing for Career Fairs

Published on Nov 18, 2015

This presentation introduces viewers to core theoretical principles from the Art of Rhetoric and suggests how they might be applied to the real-life scenario of participating in a career fair. Through an analysis of the career fair as a "drama about the pursuit of opportunity" and a "theater of error," both the rhetorical canons and rhetorical appeals are clarified for students.

Teaching Context: "Preparing for Career Fairs with the Art of Rhetoric" was presented to three English courses at Spelman College: Honors First-Year Composition (ENG 193), Grammar and Style for the Professions (ENG 250), and Writing and Editing Digital Media (ENG 390). Although it is adapted for the purposes of preparing students to attend the Atlanta University Center Consortium's fall career fair in Atlanta, GA, the information is application to anyone seeking information about the intersection between subjects such as writing, rhetoric, new media studies, personal branding, career planning, career resources, and career fairs.
