PROHIBITION

-During the 1920s there was a belief that alcohol was the root of most social problems.
-Prohibition was seen as the solution to the nation’s poverty, crime and violence issues.
-The 18th amendment prevented the production and sale of alcohol from 1920-1933.

FLAPPERS

-Flappers were a generation young women who behaved and dressed in a unconventional manner.
-Flappers adopted a carefree attitude and fast-paced lifestyle.

NOUVEAU RICHE

-Nouveau riche or “new money”, refers to people to have recently acquired wealth in their generation.
-In contrast to “old money” of having wealth due to family inheritance.
-Nouveau riche is usually derogatory, used to describe the newly rich who flaunt their wealth.
-Flaunting their is an implication of their lower-class origin and lack of taste to use wealth.

THE AMERICAN DREAM

-The American Dream is the idea of having an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work and determination. -This idea started to change during the 1920s from the right to create a better life to the desire to acquire material things.

F. SCOTT FITZGERALD

-F. Scott Fitzgerald was born in St. Paul Minnesota.
-Fitzgerald had a romantic imagination and had a desire for success more important than reality.
-He had admiration for the wealthy but mostly distrusted them.
-The desire to be a part of the rich, but remaining an outcast was the basis of most of his writing.
-Fitzgerald married Zelda, but her family didn’t approve since higher status girls were to marry well.

THE GREAT GATSBY

-“The Great Gatsby”, was written by F. Scott Fitzgerald in 1925.
-The novel was inspired by the grand parties Fitzgerald attended and the elite and wealthy class and culture he wished to join.
-The novel wasn’t popular and was considered a comercial failure when it was first published.
-The novel eventually received its appreciation and success decades after.
-The novel perfectly depicts the 1920s with its themes of society and class, wealth, and visions of America.
