METALS

FACTS ABOUT METALS

  • is easily pulled into wires and hammered into thin sheets
  • is a good conductor of electricity
  • Has luster or the ability to reflect light

MAGNESUIM

  • is highly flammable
  • Used in race cars, airplanes, and bicycles
  • Several times the price of aluminum

NONMETALS

NONMETALS

  • Has no metallic properties
  • Usually are gases at room tempature
  • Has a dull surface
  • No luster
  • Poor conductors

FLUORINE

  • The most reactive of all the elements
  • Formed in the compound Teflon
  • Teflon is used in toothpaste
  • Teflon is used in non-stick cooking pans

METALLOIDS

METALLOIDS

  • Metalloids have both chemical and physical properties of metals and nonmetals
  • Are semiconductors which contact thermal energy at high tempature said but not at low tempatures
  • Being a semiconductor is useful in computers, televisions, and solar cells

SILICON

  • Most sand is formed with compounds of silicon and oxygen
  • Silicon is used in many electronic devices
  • Silicon is a major ingredient in glass
  • Silicon is used to make medical tubing
