JAMAICA IS AN ISLAND

NATION IN THE CARIBBEAN SEA.

Jamaica is south of Florida and it would take 7 hours to fly there from Minnesota.

The original inhabitants of Jamaica were the indigenous Taíno. They arrived by canoe from the Yucatan peninsula sometime before 2000 BCE.

Christopher Columbus was the first European to arrive in Jamaica in 1494.

By 1655, England controlled Jamaica and established it as a plantation. They used slaves to grow many crops.

Slavery was abolished in Jamaica in 1834, 31 years before it was abolished in the USA.

Many of the freed slaves became farmers. Farming is still an important part of Jamaica today.

2.8 million people live in Jamaica today and it is slightly smaller than Connecticut.

3.6 million people live in Connecticut.

Bob Marley, the most famous Reggae singer ever, was born in Jamaica.

Jamaica has been more successful in track & field (per capita) than any other country in the world.

In 1948, Dr. Arthur Wint was the first Jamaican to win Olympic gold.

Usain Bolt, currently the world's fastest man, is from Jamaica.

His top speed was 27.8 mph.

The Jamaican bobsled team was the first team to qualify for the Winter Olympics from a tropical country.

"Cool Runnings" is a movie that was made about them.
