Coral Reefs

By: Ashley Migliore and Natalie Brown
Coral Reefs- “a reef composed mainly of coral and other organic matter of which parts have solidified into limestone.”

Glory to Gory

“Ten percent of the world's reefs have been completely destroyed.
In the Philippines, where coral reef destruction is the worst, over 70% have been destroyed and only 5% can be said to be in good condition.”

Human Population

“Human population has become very large, and earth is warming.”

Pollution-All the trash that is thrown away is actually thrown into the ocean and kills animals and the coral reefs, which can also kill many sea life.

Fishing-All the fishing that the world does affects the population of sea life and the life of the coral reefs.

Sediment, nutrient and pesticide pollution from catchment runoff is having a major impact on the health and resilience of the reef ecosystem.

Global Warming

Global warming has caused the water to heat up, causing the Coral Reefs to die

Temperature warming- causes the ocean to start heating up, which makes the corals dry out, shrivel up, and die

Coral reefs drying out- this is from the ring of the temperature creating too much heat in the ocean for the coral to survive

Global Warming Cycle

This is a cycle that shows how global warming will affect the ocean and everything living in it

Explosives

Dynamite blows the Coral Reefs up

Cyanide is a type of explosion poison material
All these explosives kills fish, coral, and many other sea life

These explosives can also ruin the ocean in not just living life, but the look and cleanliness of the ocean

Climate Change

Climate change is the most destructive to reefs.

"Climate change remains the most serious threat to the Great Barrier Reef. It is already affecting the reef and is likely to have far-reaching consequences in the decades to come.”

"Coral are collectives, like ant colonies."

"Most corals are composed of hundreds to hundreds of thousands of coral individuals."

"Corals can live in dark, cold waters."

"Coral reefs support more species per unit area than any other marine environment."

Untitled Slide

"Coral reefs serve as barriers for the coast, protecting wet lands, ports, and harbors.

"Some of the best reference of sea level training change come from information in corals."

"Growth banding in some species of corals, are much like tree rings."

Untitled Slide

"Approximately about 30 million people depend on coral reefs for their lively hood."

"Coral reefs are found all around the world in tropical and subtropical oceans at a depth of less than 50 meters."

"Corals are animals called polyps." (a sea anemone)

Untitled Slide

"Coral reefs cover less than 0.2% of our oceans, but they contain 25% of the worlds marine fish species."

"Coral reefs are buffers and protect coastal communities."

"Corals can protect themselves, each polyp has a ring of tentacles that can sting for defense or capture food."

"Coral reefs are formed by two types of coral, the stone coral and the soft coral."

"The bright colors that some corals have come from the pigments or algae in their tissue."

"Coral reefs grow slowly, they grow from 10-20 centimeters a year."
