Take care of yourself first

We seem to put everything else in place of our own health needs.

Examples of ways in which this is a good thing.
Parenting a sick child, helping at work.

We owe it to the people we serve to put our health first.

Think of the lack of clear thought at a 2:30 meeting, having energy left to play with your kids/dogs when you get home from work, etc.

My goal is for you to become more selfish.
Selfish actually means self love.

Untitled Slide

We are all high achievers. Work more with less resources. Get up early, stay late. First one in, last one out. That is our style here.

Leaders needs to model appropriate health behavior. Lack of this will create burnout and turnover in a company.

Do we have leaders that model that behavior?

UW-L's Dimensions of Wellness
Holistic approach to wellness.

physical

Dominate dimension when talking about balance and health.
Sleep

Sleep

We wear all nighters as a badge of honor. It is a sign of weakness to get a full night of sleep.
Lack of sleep = more likely to get sick, less effective at work, etc.
Lack of sleep compared to being intoxicated. University of New South Wales.
Many jobs have mandated periods of rest. Truckers, pilots, etc.
Sleep is an important family value as well as a leadership value.

Inactivity

Inactivity now kills more people each year than smoking.

We may spend all day at our desk.

Zoo animals like elephants are mandated to get a certain amount of activity each day.

Audit of how much time we spend sitting or sedentary each day.

Drive to work, sit at work, drive home, sit at dinner, sit to watch the Bachellorette.

We whine about having to walk to get the things we printed. We will drive around target for three minutes to find a close parking spot.

Get some breaks in. How can we do this? Elevated desks, wireless headset, stretch, cycle or treadmill while we work at home or in the office. Park on the street, walk to work, etc. Set a timer, use an app. Never regret exercise.
Fitbits, nike fuelband, jawbone, pedometer.

What can we do now?

Now that we are excited and ready to take action. How can we do it.

How to get our lifestyle on track for good.

Set goals. "We manage what we measure."

Employee wellness ideas: walking clubs,
Make being healthy the easy choice: Fruits accessible in fridge. No cake and soda at events, but fruit and water.
