About Me

How'd I get Here
Traveled extensively on the west coast having WAY MORE fun than I should have.Worked in a deli. Kind of aimless.

My brother was the one who inspired me to start subbing. On day one, at KT MurphyI feel in love, enrolled for my Masters and the rest is history. I taught third grade for six years and fourth grade for four years at Springdale. I am now a fifth grade teacher at RIPP!

I feel like my life experiences help me in the classroom.

Passion
Energy
Enthusiasm

I'm going to be real. To do this job correctly, it will be the hardest job you've ever had to do! Between demands of pacing guides, standardized testing, and just general correcting, it hard work.

Dismiss the idea of I can't smile for 2 months, need to be a drill sergeant, and won't give an A or 4 out first marking period. Set high academic and behavior expectations and follow through. Kids will see right through you if you don't.

On the flip side. Let your kids in. Show them you're human. Laugh with them. Hold them accountable for expectations.

Talk about your passions. Be passionate about the concepts you teach.

Your attitude is infectious. That's a little trade secret. Even if you don't love a subject, act like you do.

Reflective

It's like I'm a mirror
And no, I'm not talking about the Justin Timberlake song. Don't be afraid to look in the mirror and analyze what YOU did if kids are not grasping concepts or skill.

Always think about what can go better. ASK. YOUR. STUDENTS. for feedback. Be honest in your thinking. Reflection is a very strong tool to improve your classroom practice. You will complete fail. Reflect and improve.

Take diligent notes using an app like Evernote or Google Drive.

Best laid plans sometimes will not go as planned. Embrace the improvisational moments that happen.

Relationships

The pathway to magic
I could spend all day talking about the importance of relationships. Form them. Build them. Harness them. The are the foundation of your classroom. I want you to leave this room thinking how you are going to form relationships.

Kids NEED to know that are a valued member of your classroom family. Is it always easy, no. I'm not going to pretend that it is, but work hard at it. IMHO, not to deter you, but rewards are NOT effective for building relationships. That carrot stick approach is all short term. Get to the core of the children you teach.

Encourage taking risks.

Engage parents immediately. "Brand yourself." Be transparent using tools such as Remind and a classroom website. You have tools at your disposal to be transparent.

This. Forget that believe that quiet is better. My class is complete "purposeful chaos." It's loud, exciting, engaging, and students are focused.

Your best weapon against inappropriate behavior is ENGAGING LESSONS!

That's been my behavior management system for 5 years. Awards or incentives have no place in my classroom anymore.

With that said, kids are acknowledged for hard work day in a day out. The feedback given to them is super focused and purposeful.

Co-Construct Rules and expectations for rituals and routines.

Listen to student's feedback

PRO TIP: Just talk to them!!!

Build Trust. Speak to them privately. Have lunch bunches with them. Get to know them on a personal level, find their passions not just academically.

Encourage them to take risks. Show them you make mistakes

Ask them what can make lessons more engaging.

Give them surveys a few times a year.
