Give it meaning and think outside the "picture" box. Pictures, Quotes on pictures, screenshots of other apps (math, geog, science), collage, tell a collaborative story, take on a character from a novel or in history, make a theme of the week/month, get the kids involved.
Start with co-creating digital citizenship expectations and success criteria (if graded) or “What makes a great post?” “What makes a great comment?”
Make a hashtag for your class and possibly for individual projects. Will you follow students? Decide if they can use their own accounts?
Public or private, be mindful of invisible audiences. Inside jokes can be misinterpreted from outside the classroom.
Give options (do not force them to use Instagram). Let them use Office 365 to post their photos if they do not have access to mobile devices, or start there to show expectations of digital citizenship.
