hiring

Principles of hiring

1.) Know what you want

  • Job Description: The clearer you are, the easier they are to spot
  • Hire for the future, not the present
  • Look within your institution; skills are easy to teach, but values and culture are not

2.) Develop your plan

  • How will you determine your fit?
  • Invite @ 70%
  • Categories for interview questions: Skill, Value, Behavior, Character
  • The best predictor of future success is past success.
  • Hire for _______ and train for skills.

3.) Be selective

  • NO hire is better than a BAD hire
  • 3C's: Character, Competency, Chemistry
  • Don't settle

4.) Hire...then onboard

  • Training is critical
  • Orientation + Onboarding
  • Feedback is the greatest tool for growth
  • Take advantage of their objectivity

Retention + Motivation

two things to avoid

  • Fear & Threats
  • Candy & Promises

Motivate to Last

  • Be the example.
  • Appreciate others' performance.
  • Discipline when needed.

Feedback & Evaluations

Without honest, timely, and helpful feedback, growth is lmited.

We don't know
what we don't know.

FEEDBACK

  • WHEN: Make it immediate & normal. What's evaluated, improves.
  • HOW: Climate of safety to appreciate or coach.
  • WHO: Separate the "who" from the "do," and show you care.

Evaluations

  • Review performance data
  • Information for employment decisions
  • Record of performance
