In today’s society, women will spend more time pursuing their own dream and focus on improving themselves, rather than being a man’s accessories.

In the article “Freedom vis a vis Independence: An Overview in Light of Feminism, Women's Development and Empowerment”, Harasankar Adhikari selected 50 girls (that have different backgrounds) for investigation, in his journal he discussed about how women will break out their stereotypes and shaping their own point of view.

During his research, he find out that women are trying to be financially independent because they want to make their own decision on life, they pursue the same abilities and responsibilities as men, rather than blindly relying on men when facings issue, they hope to have the same voice as men in their family and society, so they can be free from any control and have the power of decision-making, “the financial self sufficiency would provide them freedom. So, they had been shown their trend to become a wage earner” (Adhikari 284), just like Lena Lingard in My Antonia, she aspires to earn money and became success, Lena is satisfied to have a good time on her own and she has no intention in marriage, Lena is an attractive and autonomy, she can make and bear any decision she makes herself.

During the research, Harasankar find out that in some traditional society, “women were indoctrinated from an early age that they need to prepare them to be good and faithful wives and mothers” by their parents or elder people in their family (Adhikari 278), they will not prosper with their own family and their family will treat her like a guest after they get married. But as education levels increase, women gradually realize that they need to be independent and “freedom to enjoy their lives without threats and interference of their male partner or other seniors.” (Adhikari 285),

Modern women are hoping to live the way they want and seeking to control their own lives, instead of living a life arranged by others, or living a life that needs to depend on others, women's independence not only achieves their goals, but also brings security in their lives and the ability and confidence to say “no” to any unfair circumstances.
