CHARACTER TRAIT (beginning)
In the beginning Jace is a little more laid back than usual. But he still doesn't give a care in the world, if it doesn't involve him or someone he cares about.

QUOTE
"I don't know," Jace said again. "And when he asked me to go back to Idris, I said no. I'm still here. Doesn't that count for anything?" Pg 22

Jace

This quote shows that Jace is still a little shook up from what happened with his father in the previous book. Normally Jace would have snapped back with some smart remark.

CHARACTER TRAIT (middle)
Jace is used to getting attention. When Clary keeps pushing him away from her, he doesn't know how to deal with it.

QUOTE
"Clary." Jace said again."I thought you were avoiding me--" A flash of irritation shot through Simon. (You're her brother), he wanted to shout down the phone line, (that's all. You don't own her. You've got no right to sound so--- so--- BROKENHEARTED.)
Pg 225

This quote shows that Simon (Clary's best-friend) doesn't care much for how Jace acts like he knows Clary even though he hasn't known her long. Simon thinks Jace is just looking for attention.

CHARACTER TRAIT (end)
Jace is finally back to his normal self. When he realized that his Father (Valentine) is up to no good, Jace helps his people fight to save their lives from the millions of demons Valentine has summoned.

QUOTE
"By the Angel," he spat, "you dragged me off here in the middle of the battle just to ask me the same questions again? You didn't believe me the first time and you still don't believe me. You'll never believe me, despite everything that's happened, even though everything I told you was the truth." Pg 391

This quote shows that Jace is fed up with the Inquisitor thinking that he is lying about not helping his father Valentine Morgernstern take over the Shadow World. When in reality Jace hates his father and what he has become.

Theme

The theme of this book is to never rush. When you rush you tend to make mistakes. Think things through thoroughly. Most important is to never jump to conclusions.

QUOTE (beginning)
She set the glass down on the table beside her. It was empty. "And you answer questions with questions to throw me off, just like Valentine always did. Maybe I should have known." Pg 21

At the time in the book, everyone is finding out that Valentine is Jace's father. Maryse (Alec and Isabelle's Mother) is rushing to conclusions that Jace is bad like his father. Jace just wants people to see that he's still the same person. This shows to not rush on judging people because sometime they're not who you think they are.

QUOTE (middle)
That was all Clary saw as she stared at him in bewilderment, a body. Someone very dead, arms and legs dangling like limp ropes, head fallen back to expose the mangled throat. She felt Jace's hand tighten around her arm like a vise, and only then did she look more closely and see the familiar corduroy jacket with it's torn sleeve, the blue t-shirt underneath now stained and spotted with blood, and then she screamed. Pg 190

At this time in the book Raphael (leader of the vampires in Brooklyn, New York) brought Clary, Jace, and Isabelle a body to the Institute. But it's just not anyone's dead body... it's Simon's dead body. Raphael killed Simon with his vampire clan, and drained him of blood. But wait he's not fully dead yet. The three decide to have Simon reborn from a mundane (human) into a vampire. Clary rushed the 'reborning' and Simon attacked her looking for blood. This shows to not rush people. They are going to need time to adjust.

QUOTE (end)
Jace was hundreds of feet up at the edge of the roof of the Institute now, looking down, and then he stepped off the roof into empty air, as calmly as if he were stepping off a porch. Clary screamed out loud as he fell like a stone--- And landed lightly on his feet just in front of her. He rose up out of a shallow crouch and grinned at her. "If I made a joke about just dropping in," he said, "would you write me off as a cliche?" Pg 338

This quote shows that Jace is discovering his hidden talent, which is not dying when doing crazily stupid things. Jace took his time developing his special ability's so it did not end up like a train wreck.

The author's purpose of this book was to entertain. The author shows a strong bias against people trying to take over the world.

QUOTE
"I don't know. He's a lunatic. It's hard to guess what a lunatic will do next." Jace avoided her eyes, and Clary knew what he was thinking: War. That was what Valentine wanted. War with the Shadow Hunters. And he would get it too. It was only a matter of where he would strike first. Pg 448

This quote shows that Valentine is a lunatic and wants to have a war to gain power against his own kind, Shadow Hunters.

QUOTE
"My father would let you kill me in front of him before he'd hand you either the Mortal Sword or the Mortal Cup." Jace spat. The Inquisitor shook her head. "No father-- not even Valentine-- would sacrifice his son for a hunk of metal, no matter how powerful." Jace laughed. "You don't know my father. He'll laugh in your face and offer you some money to mail my body back to Idris." "Don't be absurd----" the Inquisitor snapped."You're right," said Jace. "Come to think of it, he'll probably make you pay the shipping charges yourself." Pg 306

This quote shows the author's purpose to entertain.

Conclusion

I absolutely loved the first book (The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones) so I thought I would give the second a try. This book was amazing! I highly recommend this book.
