  • The 18th Amendment banned alcohol in the U.S
  • It lead to the illegal sale of alcohol and the rise of the Mafia
  • American Culture was very liberal and free at the time
  • The Great Gatsby took place during the Prohibition

BOOTLEGGING

  • The illegal trafficking and selling of liquor
  • Major crime families, including the Mafia took part
  • Al Capone, the leader of the Chicago Mafia, played a huge part in it
  • America was in a time of prosperity but was becoming corrupt
  • Mr. Gatsby might have made his fortune off of bootlegging
