HIVE

INFINITE LEARNING CAPACITY
School's learning capacity is limited by the number of classrooms and teachers. One teacher to many students lessens the overall impact of learning.

HIVE seeks to engage more learners in collaborative learning that transcends the notion of school. Teachers must become adept at connecting students to other students, educators, and experts. This creates an infinite learning capacity called HIVE.

"If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear as it is, infinite."
William Blake

Learning is infinite.

learning
needs
not
school

It's pretty black and white, learning exists without school. School cannot exist without learning. If we are to keep school relevant to students who can engage in ubiquitous on demand learning, then we must determine how design learning with schools to be the same.

ABOUT EDUCATION I DREAM

I dream about what it can be. Not just little changes, but changes that affect the whole system. Education theorist? Maybe. Do I desire deep learning for every child? I do.

What do I dream about? I dream about
.a paradigm shift to open ubiquitous learning
.school note being school but a community of learners
.mastery learning for all students at all levels
.educators who leave sills and connect to each other
.students who want learn for the sake of learning
.teachers who collaborate daily to improve instruction
.assessment that truly measures student growth
.classrooms that are open
.learning that is rich and varied

10% THINKING

REINFORCES INCREMENTAL CHANGE
10% thinking in education is typically the ideas we always consider to make education better. This includes planning time, policy, testing, PLCs and more.

While all of these concerns do something to change education to small degree, the shift is incremental to what education really needs.

So the question is, "What evolution is needed?"

10% CHANGE

  • high stakes testing
  • policy
  • accountability
  • funding
  • changing standards
No comments needed. These bullet points exude incremental change.

10X THINKING

RETHINK EDU PROBLEMS
Education needs to learn how to play a different tune because the current playlist isn't in the Top 40.

"You have to rip things up and think in a different way - using another approach"

There is all kind of talk reform that is needed in education - it's s major issue. Can the roots of education be ripped up to better learning for students? Is it possible to change the current course?

ENTRPRENEURIAL MINDSET

FIXED VS. GROWTH
Nothing worthwhile ever gets done without hard work, risk, and worry. The entrepreneur has these qualities

Why this mind set? Entrepreneurs are willing to take risks. Education, in its general current state, has a fixed mindset - using the same tactics with little change. In a growth mindset, the mindset of a entrepreneur, nothing is fixed because the need to iterate to improve a product or service is paramount. The saying, "If it ain't broke broke don't fix it." doesn't apply.

The innovative spirit that drives indivduals to excel focuses on a growth mindset.

"In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They’re wrong."

In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Virtually all great people have had these qualities."
Dweck, Carol. "MINDSET." Mindset. Carol Dweck, 2010. Web. 22 Oct. 2014. .

UNWRAP

Unwrap a new way of looking at learning and school. We don't need a Superman complex to make this shift. We need to understand that learning is present, ubiquitous, and desired.

It is often assumed students don't want to learn. In a free learning society, students are free to learn topics of interest to them. We need to unwrap how to make this happen for them while having them master standards.

ITERATE

ECONOMICS OF LEARNING
Every classroom has coined its own currency. Usually it' the "do as I say" and "play the points game."

We need a new currency. That currency is rooted in deep learning expectations, relentless pursuit of mastery, development of nimble learners, and the iteration to improve learning experiences for all students.

HIVE

INFINITE LEARNING CAPACITY
Hive is a metaphor that represents 2 concepts. The first is that a hive represents community. Narrowly defining community it is the community of learners in a given space. The broader context is the global learning community. As a community, the hive grows and functions to improve and better its members. Metaphorically, students are the are entity education desires to grow and better not just school for each graduate needs to be productive in society armed with common competencies. The hive perpetuates a thriving society when the members are nurtured and sustained.

The second concept is connection between hive cells.

Infinite capacity of learners to make connections with other learners in physical and more non-physical spaces.

Each student represents a node who influence other nodes extending the overall learning capacity to infinity.

It's about allowing students to learn at their rate, capacity, and level while facilitating connections to other students, classrooms, schools, and experts to deepen their learning while mastering identified competencies.

Hive takes education from a single location to multiple learning nodes. Learning becomes flexible, instantaneous, personal, and individual.

Hive adopts the growth mindset where educators encourage students to challenge themselves to push t heir own boundaries of learning. This requires a different set of skills - facilitation skills. These are skills that push students to think deeply and to produce products that demonstrate authentic learning. Learning how to share high quality feedback to help students understand what they didn't understand and how to improve their understanding.

Assessment is cyclical. I recently completed a Thinglink that demonstrates the cyclical nature of assessment and how it helps Improve student learning. The once and done assessment mentality creates a barrier to deeper and authentic learning.

INTER

CONNECTED
The primary purpose is to establish inter-connected students in physical and virtual spaces.

The connection between students is limitless. It already is when considering social media. There is no boundary or limit using technology, and student can leverage it in multiple ways to create meaningful experiences personal to them.

Educators must also be inter-connected. The notion of PLN comes to mind. Teachers understanding of creating a vast learning web allows them to help students create theirs.

PURPOSELY

CONNECTING KIDS
The goal is to purposely connect students to the places and times needed to help them learn. That's the role of school and educators.

SCHOOL

ROLE OF
School is a place that houses people who learn both teachers and students. A school needs learning to exist where learning doesn't need school.

As teacher help students purposely connect with others, school becomes the local hangout for students to connect to teach other.

School becomes learning online and in person where blended learning is the norm, student schedules are driven by student needs and flexible, and classes no longer exist. Students visit the expert they need which is either an educator, student, someone online, or other.

Judge for yourself, is hive learning 10X thinking or 10% change?
