• The war begins
• Poland is invaded and Benjamin is taken to friends of his parents when he is just a baby

• Benjamin is renamed Henk so that the Nazis will think he is not Jewish

1945

• The war ends
• Henk is 7when he is returned to his family in Poland

• Henk doesn't remember his family
• His "parents" call him Benjamin, but he prefers Henk

1945

• Henk/Benjamin is old enough for school
• He goes to school and when Mark hears Benjamin's name, he knows he Jewish

1945

• Marks father was a Nazi so he was raised to hate Jewish people
• At the end of Benjamin's first day of school, Marl rides by him on his bike and throws a rock at his head

1945

• On Benjamin's way home, he sees Mark at the park so he takes a different way home and gets lost
• He sees a policeman and asks for help
